Meeting Megan Kirkwood! What I learned from the freelancer sensation

Continuing with my lovely yet hectic uni life, I had received the wonderful opportunity to interview a Canadian Fashion Professional, who was none other than the lovely Megan Kirkwood! Yet how did it come to that? Who is she? And what secrets of the fashion industry did I discover? Well that’s why this specific post will be dedicated to her, and my experience with the interview.

It all began on a beautiful day of September 23rd, where 6:30 outside of the famously popular Ryerson café Balzac, myself and three other wonderful classmates, Nicole Tinker, Carolyn Monteith and Emily Steverson, waited anxiously for our first interview assignment with Kirkwood. But who is this lovely lady? Well she is a freelance beauty editor for several publications such as the Globe and Mail, (in addition the Globe Style Advisor) Glow, Hello! Canadian Health & Lifestyle and Glam Canada. She is also a consultant for many beauty brands, like Shiseido, Burt’s Bees, and Cots Canada. With so many accomplishments under her name, you can bet we were nervous of speaking to such a prestige person. I took on the majority of the role of asking Kirkwood our questions while the others wrote it down. So with the spotlight on me, my interviewing skills were put to the test.

It begun Kirkwood explaining how she came about to finding her passion, first beginning at Flare magazine internship of the summer before her forth year of university. The internship was competitive and stressful we were told, but she received a position within the beauty department, and thus her editorial journey began. It wasn’t until after working five years in the magazine industry Kirkwood realized she wanted to become her own boss. “Maybe I don’t want to work for someone for the rest of my life,” she stated, explaining how she applied to jobs outside of publishing and began to fall in love with the experience of a freelancer. Her comment struck a cord within me, considering I thought about the idea with my own potential writing career. Kirkwood enjoyed the freedom of being a freelance writer, and the opportunity to work with different brands, magazines, and newspapers. She emphasized how consulting for beauty brands came very organically, and now her business consists about 50% of it.

Kirkwood was previously a Ryerson Fashion student, so she understood the struggle of trying to find your place within the fashion industry. It was especially relating with Kirkwood about the stress of assignments and figuring out future jobs, stating, “Don’t stress. I was a stress case.”

Sipping her coffee from the café we were interviewing her, she gave us the inside of the ups and downs of being your own boss. Of course the freedom of planning your own schedule was an absolute perk, but there was also the uncertainty of a paycheck that other jobs guarantee. However, despite the drawbacks like paychecks and taxes (for if you are a freelancer, you pay your own taxes), she said with a smile, “I haven’t had the urge to return to a traditional office job yet,” which reassured me greatly on my own delegation with my blog. Of course her being a freelancer I asked what advice she would say to any aspirational writer/blogger, and responded that networking was key. Connect yourself to everything, essentially making your name searchable. Kirkwood impressively enough has two blogs, the sites being http://megankirkwood.com/, which is more used as a portfolio, while http://potofroses.com/ is more lifestyle and personal stuff (the food she finds looks delicious!). Even part-taking in events, such as Kirkwood did by becoming part of the Ryerson Mass Exodus Show, really exposed her to everything and what this industry was.

We wrapped up the interview of asking Kirkwood inside scoop of the Fall Beauty trends this year, which she joyfully told us her predictions. “The ponytail at Valentino is going to be big,” she emphasized. Matte red lipstick, liquid liner, and big brow are the “classics” as she labeled, and the sudden love for nude nail colour and spidery lashes are also hot this upcoming season.

From the very last moment it ended, I realized how much Kirkwood’s words strengthen my resolve to succeed in the fashion industry. If I keep trying, and as she said it, “Stay cool,” it will all come to you.

TREND ALERT: Western Eastern – Kimono and Fringe?

I always vowed I hated fringe. It looked tacky, sloppy, and simply not enough girlie elements to it. It reminded of the cowboy way too much, and no offense beauties of the south, I wasn’t a fan of the western style. Yet as I went to see a movie (Guardians of the Galaxy, a MUST see loves) I noticed a girl who was rocking the dreaded thing, but to my surprise I…liked it. Loved it even. And the only way I liked the fringe I realized was that it was paired with a beautiful kimono over sweater. Ever since, I started to see it everywhere, and I couldn’t deny it: I loved the bloody thing. And I needed to get one!

PF-east-west_1965627b

Haha, all went down before the kimono fringe jacket came to be

Of course, kimono is a style orientating from the Eastern part of the world while fringe is more of Western kind of thing. But how the two cultures integrated and created something so chic…I was mind boggled.

Some things I like is the Reverse Sweet Worship Velvet Fringe Kimono from Nastygal, which by the way, has a total gothic feel to it! (Something to look out for Fall trends FYI!) Even Forever 21’s Paisley Fringe Kimono has got me hyped for the trend. Out of them all, I j’adore Zara’s take on it – printed jacket with fringes. It looks really beautiful, and the colours compliment the upcoming fall season.

Zara jacket - a must buy loves!

Zara jacket – a must buy loves!

I swear this style is going to be big, and if I’m wrong well, Nothing. Im just wrong haha.

Nominated?! The Libester Award and What it is

Liebster Award

So an unexpected yet blissful thing happened to me while I was at visiting my aunt in the hospital. Two lovely bloggers from the site THE FASHION DORKS nominated my blog for the Liebster Award, and boy that made my day! I only wrote three posts (one of them only being intro)! and someone thinks I should be nominated. I’ve never been nominated before, so this is a new feeling for me.

But what is it? Let’s break it down.

  • An award that is given out by bloggers, for bloggers, and exists as an internet award.
  • The purpose is to encourage the flow of blogging, especially that of new bloggers.
  • Similar to chain mail – once you get one, you should accept it with pride and nominate a blogger you like! It doesn’t hurt to do.
  • Awards? There’s one! And it’s the nice little feeling inside realizing someone is acknowledging your work. (I kept giggling throughout the entire day, how embarrassing!)

Now that’s done, let’s get this show on the road!

The rules are…

  • You have to link back to the person that nominated you.
  • You must answer all 11 questions given to you by the person who nominated you.
  • After completing these questions you must nominate 11 bloggers with under 200 followers and give them 11 questions of your choice.
  • You must not nominate the person who nominated you.
  • You must let your nominees know that they have been nominated and provide a link for them to your post so that they can learn about it.

What THE FASHION DORKS asked:

  • At which store do you shop the most and why?

Absolutely M for Mendocino! J’adore that store from the bottom, (and top?) of my heart. Love the boutique clothing they infuse with their style and display, and quality is ah-amazing. Funny how it’s a Canadian brand and I’m Canadian.

  • What makeup do you use for special occasions?

My Sephora Collection False Eye Lashes. Brings that extra oompf! to your eyes. (Plus I feel I could fly away with them haha)

  • What is your favourite beauty product?

My mascara. I freak out without an application on. The new one L’orèal Paris Voluminous Miss Manga is something I’m really taken a liking to!

  • What is your favourite fashion accessory?

Hats. I honestly have a new obsession with them, and with Fall coming, you’re going to expect it getting worse hehe.Urban Outfitters really have some stylish ones.

  • Who is your fashion idol?

Even though I don’t listen to her music, I really adore Taylor Swift’s style. All her looks are beautifully elegant.

  • Which items does your favourite outfit have?

My current favourite is a lace skater dress from Forever 21, Tan Fringe Poncho from M for Mendocino, and my brown floral lace ankle boots from Steve Madden. Delicate yet bold.

  • Where do you shop more – on the internet or in person?

If I could, online handsdown. I just scroll constantly through sites, because it’s fun discovering new stuff. But in reality I’m a go-in-store kind of gal.

  • What do you wear on your cozy day?

My salt and pepper pattern original pants from Roots, (But they’re missing!) and my white knitted sweater from Forever 21.

  • Which pattern is currently your favourite?

Ooohh, I gotta say pockadots. Any size will do, any colour would do, just give me pockdots!

  • Describe your style!

Girlie 100%, but heavy on neutrals and structured cuts. Love layering. And lace. Never too much lace for this lady over here.

  • What type of shoes do you like the most?

Oxfords and Loafters. Men’s shoes are the epitamy of style for me. Balances my girlie outfits, plus they’re really confortable!

So here are the ah-amazing blogs I nominate:

TREND ALERT: THE CROP WHAT?

tumblr_n8u928tbYd1s6gxe6o1_400

Hello Readers!

Thankfully, I’m done high school now *dances weirdly* and summer has BE-GUN! (Well, a few weeks ago it did). I will be starting fashion school in September, so I will defiantly use this as my journal for updates of my daily adventures as a fashion student! However, autumn will wait, because right now summer is the focus.

First off, if anyone notices, a huge trend has developed recently, and that is the crop top (or even the bra top!) Paired with daisy dukes or maxi skirts, it’s the perfect little piece to have this summer. It’s fresh, light, and has an element of flirtatiousness (I believe) Designers labels like Badgley Mischka showcase the trend with their oh so distinct influence of nautical 20’s style. Check their collection! I also really liked Diane Von Furstenberg Spring/Summer line, as their crop styles are too gorgeous, like their Avalon Printed Cotton Corset Top. (Shown above)

Of course, more common brands that we have access to like H&M and Dynamite have their cute-to-sexy take on it. I noted some picks that I’ve taken an adorable liking to, and even purchased haha, like H&M’s jersey top, and my favourite, Dynamite’s scuba bustier. (P.S I got a top SIMILAR to the H&M one I’ve shown, but with a crew neck).

So dismiss your families’ notations about your shirt shrinking in the wash, or you’re too stubborn to let your clothes go. Say it’s a trend, and hopefully they will come around.
But the bra top trend… THAT might be more of a challenge hehe.

First Post! Let’s get introductions started, shall we?

Hello Readers! I’m SO EXCITED! Today I’m officially starting my blog besides my tumblr one. I really wanted to expand my blog besides beautiful pics (Not that it’s a bad thing!) and WordPress is really a great place to put your thoughts out there. This site would have more in depth of what I did before, like fashion trends, but I also want to do anything relating to the industry, including art, events, and even the Toronto life. I cannot wait to start posting more. This is going to be fun hehe.

Thanks for reading loves,

Alexandria Kingly

P.S. My last name is Regis, but translate in Latin means Kingly. Neat, huh?
